The Importance of a Back Workout to Muscle Building
Most people, especially men, would like to achieve a
full, more solid frame that women find attractive. Even though these
guys are not competitive bodybuilders, they try to spend a good deal of
time in the gym working on their arms and chest muscles. The results,
though, are not normally very gratifying. This is because the main
muscles groups that are all too often forgotten are the back muscles.
A lot of people fail to realize that the vast majority
of muscles in the upper body are located in the back and shoulders.
This is a logical arrangement because the spine is located in the back,
and has the potential to be the weakest link in the body without extra
support from some serious muscle groups. Of course, guys who like to
work out and check their progress in a mirror don't realize how
important these muscles can be to their general good health, let alone
their appearance.
A workout that places emphasis on the deltoids and lats
as well as the muscles that parallel and support the spine can go a
long way toward giving a man the inverted triangle, wide shoulder and
back physique he is looking for. A guy can do all the bench presses and
curls he wants and wind up looking like he has a big chest and arms.
But, throw in some exercises for the back muscles, and a guy can start
to look fantastic in a relatively short time.
There are some very simple exercises that will strengthen, tone, and increase the mass of the back muscles. These are:
1. Deadlifts - Deadlifts are a standard
bent legged lift from the floor that puts stress on literally every
muscle from the fingers up the arms, through the shoulders and neck,
down the back, and finally all the way down to the toes. Maintaining
the proper form throughout the lift is important if one wishes to
achieve the desired results and reduce the risk of injury. There is no
other one exercise that can work as many muscle groups as this one.
2. Pull-ups - Pull ups, or any vertical
pulling movement will work the lats to help give that define v shape to
the back that is the basis of good muscle development in this part of
the body.
3. Rowing - Any type of horizontal
pulling motion will work the muscles in the upper and middle portions
of the back. Rowing is a classic example of a horizontal pulling
movement. There are several different training devices built to add
different amounts of resistance to the rowing motion to strengthen
these muscle groups.
4. Shrugging - Any sort of lift or
exercise that involves a shrugging motion will work the trapezious
muscles in the shoulders and neck and help to provide the diamond
appearance to the total upper body when viewed from the back. Most
people see this as a sign of strength and vitality.
Following these simple workout exercises as a part of
the total workout regimen will aid a guy in building muscle more
quickly and provide the sort of appearance that women love in a shorter
time than simply working the chest and arms like most men do when they
go to the gym.
