The Best Methods of Weight Loss
One of the most common goals of anyone seeking
self-improvement is weight loss. This is a controversial field, because
there are so many diets, exercise regimens and weight loss aids on the
market. It's often hard for people to know which method of weight loss
is the most effective. From fad diets to exercise machines, many people
will try any possible method that promises to help them shed extra
pounds, regardless of how wild the results are claimed to be.
Sometimes these programs can be downright dangerous due
to either unhealthy levels of weight loss or untested ingredients that
can cause negative side effects. Most often, the keys to weight loss
are simple changes in lifestyle that most people find hard to put into
effect.
Diet is one of the most important components of
lifestyle that determines weight. Many Americans spend their days
eating fast food or brief meals that can be prepared in the microwave,
rather than eating organic, unprocessed foods. Processed foods contain
a lot of starches, sugars and carbohydrates, all of which convert
easily to fat. Excess fat is the reason many people want to lose
weight, since it's the first substance that metabolic processes use to
fuel the body.
To have a healthy diet, it's important to include a
balance of foods from all the food groups. This includes breads,
pastas, and noodles for the carbohydrates. Anywhere from 6 to 11
servings of these should be eaten per day. Fruits and vegetables are
the next most important food group. Anywhere from 3 to 5 servings per
day should be a part of a healthy diet, and they should be fresh rather
than canned. Canned fruits and vegetables often add lots of
preservatives and sugars such as fructose. Fructose slows down the
metabolism.
Next, dairy products should compose 2 to 4 servings per
day. These include milk, yogurt, and cheese, among others. The most
important nutrients from dairy products are vitamin D and calcium.
Finally, meats should be the last food group, at 2 to 3 servings per
day. White meat is preferable to red meat.
The other major components of a healthy lifestyle are
exercise and stress level. Weight loss requires exercise, as well as a
healthy diet. The best weight loss programs focus on cardiovascular
endurance with aerobics such as running, swimming or biking. At least
20 minutes should be spent, because that's the amount of time it takes
for the body to start burning fat through cardiovascular workouts.
Stress levels, when high, cause us to eat more, and eat
less healthy foods. Many people use food as a coping mechanism. In
extreme cases, this leads into eating disorders. For most of us, it's
simply grabbing an extra slice of pizza from the fridge. Try to set
aside some relaxation time on the job. Get up and walk outside the desk
for a few minutes to let your brain clear and your stress level to go
down. Also, breathing exercises and meditation can help.
