Bodybuilding Defined for the Rest of Us

Bodybuilding is a competitive event in which men and women engage in encouraging hyper growth of all the major muscle groups in the body. This goal is achieved by a variety of methods including resistance training to extreme levels, advanced nutrition, and proper rest to allow the body to recover from the intense workouts.

The way bodybuilding competitions work is by having the contestants pose in various positions for a panel of judges who score the competitors on the overall bulk and aesthetic balance of the hypertrophic muscle groups. Special lighting and tanning are used to help to accentuate the muscle definition of each individual group being judged.

Bodybuilders build their muscles by working out intensely in resistance (weight) training. They push their bodies beyond what would be considered normal limits by working with more and more resistance until they begin to experience micro tears in the muscle fibers. Workouts are followed by periods of rest to allow the body to repair these micro tears, the process that builds up muscle fiber.

Nutrition for people engaged in bodybuilding is more complex than average people realize. Proteins, the essential building blocks needed by the body to build up muscle mass are the mainstay of bodybuilders' diets. Complex carbohydrates make up another large portion of the diet of bodybuilders. These are slow digesting carbohydrates that provide energy for the body in more level amounts for longer periods than starches and sugars as eaten by most individuals. Caloric intake by bodybuilders is generally several times more than that needed by laypeople who do not engage in the type of workouts bodybuilding requires of its participants.

A wide variety of supplements are also consumed to ensure getting the proper levels of vitamins and minerals. Diet supplements are another part of the regimen used by bodybuilders to minimize body fat percentage so that all the muscles are easily identifiable by visual inspection.

Competitive bodybuilding has a regular season, just like any sport. During the off season, participants focus intently on increasing muscle mass through intense workouts and specialized diet. Beginning just a few weeks before the season, bodybuilders adjust their diet and workout schedule to focus on reduction of body fat so that there is no extra bulk on top of the muscles when being viewed by the judges.

Men and women both compete in body building competitions. The premier event and highest title held by male body builders is Mr. Olympia. Some very famous individuals who have held this title include Tony Atlas, Lou Ferrigno, and Arnold Swarzenegger. The female competition and title is Ms. Olympia. A few famous female bodybuilders include Rachel Mclish and Bev Francis.

Bodybuilding is an intense activity involving heavy workouts alternated with periods of rest to build up a hypertrophic mass of muscle. The goal is to form an aesthetically pleasing physique where all of the muscle groups are well defined and prominently visible to a panel of judges who rank each individual based on their physical appearance as they assume a series of poses intended to show off each muscle group to its fullest advantage.
