Bodybuilding After Forty

Bodybuilding is a popular sport among men and women. The goal of bodybuilding is to build up the muscles of the body to their maximum potential and be judged based on the symmetry and perfection of their physique. This buildup in muscle mass is accomplished through a combination of intense physical workouts and resistance training and specialized nutrition. Bodybuilding after forty is a little different than it was when the person was younger.

After we reach forty, our bodies are no longer as able to maintain the rigorous routine of weightlifting and resistance training as they once were. It becomes important to modify the routine by lifting the same or less weight and increasing the reps to avoid joint injuries. Our dietary needs change somewhat and we need more of certain nutrients to maintain our condition. Other nutrients do not do us as much good as they once did.

For the most part, modifying the diet to maintain one's energy level at an older age involves changes in the schedule of meals and reducing the caloric intake because the workouts are not going to be quite as intense as they once were. It becomes necessary to consume more protein and less carbohydrates and fats than were needed at younger ages. Again, this is because the body does not have the same ability to regenerate that it once did, and there is normally less energy when we are older.

These changes will continue for as long as a person wants to continue working out and bodybuilding. Bodybuilding has been shown to lead to a longer lifespan and improved physical wellbeing in almost anyone. It is important to pay attention to the signals from the body concerning what changes are taking place and adjust the routine to accommodate these changes. While stopping bodybuilding workouts altogether would be a bad idea, modifying them as a body ages is simply good sense. Maintaining controlled workouts even if adding reps in place of more weight is the only possible choice to maintain the power of the workout is one key to continuing bodybuilding after forty.

Paying attention to the changes in the body's metabolism is the other key to continuing bodybuilding after forty. Following the instructions of a certified nutritionist can be a serious aid in maintaining a healthy diet that will optimize the way the body utilizes the calories one consumes. One solid plan involves eating more meals more often of smaller size as one gets older. This will improve the chances of maintaining a constant energy level and increased metabolism.

As one ages, the needs for protein, fats, and carbohydrates to maintain the optimum level of physical fitness and muscle tone will change gradually. Following these changes in dietary needs and making the necessary adjustments in workout intensity is the best way to maintain a body in the peak condition for one's age and continue to have a successful career as a bodybuilder after forty. If followed properly, there is no reason to stop bodybuilding before one dies of old age.
